My passion for filmmaking came early on as a child when I would spend summer nights at the movie theater with my family. Movies like Avatar, Harry Potter Pirates of the Caribbean, and Super 8 really impacted me. Feeling INSPIRED, I would think about the movie the rest of the night and dream about the magic of movies.
Later, I defiantly chose to study Film Production at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I didn't know exactly what role I wanted to be in Film, but I knew that I loved the way movies made me feel and how lasting of an impact they can be on a person. Film chose me really.
The 4.5 years at CU Boulder allowed me to get hands-on with 8mm and 16mm film, as well as digital shooting practices. I also took all of the video editing classes and worked as the Lab Monitor ( or the Editing TA) for Chris Osborne, the editing professor. In those classes I learned a whole lot about Avid, Premiere, After Effects, and Fusion. These classes alone taught me how to LEARN how to use editing software, aka problem-solving on the fly. Oh and make cool sh$t.
The short films I created during my study were mostly experimental narratives, as this was the storytelling format that CU Boulder focused on the most. Through those experiences, I discovered extremely powerful methods of stirring emotion in myself and the audience. I find that driving home a message is the most effective if you stir emotion in the viewer. At that time in my life, I had a lot to feel and a lot I needed to share which ended up being quite therapeutic to express through film. In my life now, I strive to create content that is powerful in message and emotion. Compassion and kindness are real agents of change, but they must come from within. So, to me, film is meant to touch the heart and release the soul.
